How to order in a Restaurant in France?

Are you planning a trip to France and looking forward to indulging in the delicious cuisine? Ordering food in French can seem intimidating, but with a few essential phrases, you’ll be able to navigate any restaurant menu with ease. Here are some of the most useful French vocabulary words and phrases to know when dining out in Paris:

  1. Menu – This is the French word for “menu.” It’s essential to know this word as it will be displayed on the restaurant’s entrance or handed over to you when you’re seated.
  2. Entrée – In French, this word means “starter” or “appetizer.” If you’re not sure what to order as your starter, ask your waiter or waitress for recommendations.
  3. Plat principal – This means “main course” and is typically the most substantial part of the meal.
  4. À point – This is a term used to describe the cooking of meat, meaning “medium-rare.” If you prefer your meat cooked differently, you can substitute “à point” with “bien cuit” for well-done, “saignant” for rare, or “à point saignant” for medium-rare.
  5. Vin – This is the French word for “wine.” France is known for its exceptional wines, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to try a glass or two.
  6. L’addition, s’il vous plaît – This phrase means “the bill, please.” It’s important to know this phrase, so you can ask for the check when you’re ready to leave.
  7. Fromage – Cheese is a staple in French cuisine, and it’s worth trying at least once during your trip. Fromage is the French word for “cheese.”
  8. Dessert – No meal is complete without dessert, and in French, it’s called “dessert.” From crème brûlée to tarte tatin, French desserts are not to be missed.
  9. S’il vous plaît – This is the French equivalent of “please.” Adding “s’il vous plaît” to the end of a phrase can make a big difference in how you come across to the waiter or waitress.
  10. Merci – This word means “thank you” in French. Showing your appreciation by saying “merci” is a simple but effective way to make a good impression.

By familiarizing yourself with these essential French vocabulary words and phrases, you’ll be able to confidently order food in any French restaurant. Bon appétit!
