How to Order Food in a Restaurant in France

Visiting France means more than just sightseeing—it’s also about enjoying the country’s world-famous cuisine. But if you don’t feel confident speaking French, eating out can seem intimidating. Don’t worry—we’ve prepared this practical guide on how to order food in a French restaurant so you can dine like a local.

1. Greeting the Waiter

In France, it’s polite to greet the staff before asking for a table. A simple:

  • Bonjour, une table pour deux, s’il vous plaît. (Hello, a table for two, please.)

This small gesture shows respect and immediately creates a positive impression.

2. Asking for the Menu

Most restaurants offer both a menu (la carte) and a set menu (le menu or la formule).

  • La carte, s’il vous plaît. (The menu, please.)

  • Quelles sont les spécialités de la maison ? (What are the house specialties?)

3. Ordering Food and Drinks

When ready, use these simple phrases:

  • Je voudrais… (I would like…)

  • Pour moi… (For me…)

  • L’addition, s’il vous plaît. (The bill, please.)

If you want to order tap water (which is free):

  • Une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît.

4. Useful Vocabulary for French Restaurants

  • Starter / Appetizer – Entrée

  • Main course – Plat principal

  • Dessert – Dessert

  • Wine list – La carte des vins

5. Cultural Tips for Dining in France

  • Meals are often slower and more social than in other countries—don’t rush.

  • Service is usually included in the bill, but rounding up or leaving small change is appreciated.

  • Always say merci when the waiter brings your food or drink.
